Olympic Games Are Pretty Spectacular

I go from "the Olympic Games are a big money-making machine" to "the Olympic Games are just plain spectacular as spectacle and as sport." Today, I'm thinking, they're pretty spectacular.

Most Awesome Things Olympic 2010

1. Shaun White, snowboard, pulls off the double McTwist.

2. Figure skater Joannie Rochette is sweeter and more beautiful than anybody, and more courageous even than Shaun White.

3. U.S. 2 Canada 2 at the end of regulation. OK, I'll still put Canada 3 U.S. 2 (OT) in the 3rd slot, as long as I can also mention that U.S. goalie Ryan Miller was named MVP of the Olympic hockey tournament.

4. Short track speedskater Apolo Ohno continues to charm everybody--well, everybody except the judge who (rightfully, as it happens) DQs Apolo in the 500.

5. Alpine skier Lindsay Vonn. Man, can she talk. Still, I like her.

6. The 2 Koreans wipe out, handing medals to Ohno and J.R. Celski in the men's 1500.

7. "The screamer," Katherine Reuter of the U.S., wins silver in ladies 1000 m short track speed skating.

8. Evan Lysacek thumps that cocky Russian, Plushenko, in men's figure skating. Not that figure skating is a sport, of course.

9. Bode Miller, U.S., won how many medals in Alpine skiing?

10. Americans Bill DeMong and Johnny Spillane kick ass in the combined. Combined what?

  1. Best post-Olympics aftermath story. U.S. ice hockey goalie Ryan Miller's first game back with his Buffalo Sabres is at Pittsburgh, home of Sidney Crosby, who scored Canada's game-winning goal. The Olympians are introduced before the game. Miller, the visitor, gets a bigger ovation than Crosby, the home team-hometown boy.
