Finally, an Upset (in Class AA)

Apparently the seed-makers know what they're doing because the higher seeds went 11-1 yesterday. There was finally one upset last night as the unseeded Albany Huskies torched the #2 Holy Family Fire 60-49 in a clear case of too much Paige Meyer. The 5-6 sophomore guard scored 32 points and added 16 rebounds and 5 assists. Holy Family countered with guards Leigh Steiner and Grace Elander, but Meyer them both by a point, though Steiner also added 7 steals. But the Fire front line shot a collective 3-for-23 and Albany won the rebound battle 43-23. Albany shot 50 percent, Holy Family just 30.

The other 3 games went according to form, but just barely. #1 seed Roseau--the 2017 champs and 2018 runners-up--barely survived unseeded, unsung Redwood Valley 75-74 as a Redwood 3 at the buzzer bounced away. Redwood led 39-31 at the half after hitting 5-of-8 3s. They still led 42-31 early in the 2nd half when Roseau began their comeback. They caught up at 43-42 and led 63-54 at 6:50 before Redwood began their comeback.

In the end Redwood scored one more FG but Roseau made 15-of-16 FT while Redwood made 11-of-17. The Borowicz sisters scored 70 points between them (sophomore Katie 37, senior Kacie 33). They made 25-of-49 FG, Katie made 6-of-9 3s and they combined for a decisive 14-of-14 at the line.

#3 Minnehaha and #4 Caledonia won more easily. Minnehaha ground down a young St. Peter team 56-37 while Caledonia did the same against Proctor 56-44. The RedHawks had 4 players in double figures, Caledonia had Katie Tornstrom with 25 points. None of these 4 teams shot better than 35%.

Top Performers

The top performers in AA yesterday really stood out so they're all pretty easy picks.

Paige Meyer, Albany

Katie Borowicz, Roseau

Kacie Borowicz, Roseau

Katie Tornstrom, Caledonia

Haley Garman, Redwood, sophomore, post, 21 points, 10 reb, 2 asts, 2 stls

More Top Performers

Leigh Steiner, Holy Family

Aubree Hicks, Redwood, sophomore, guard, came off the bench to score 20 points on 4-of-7 3s

Payton Rodberg, Proctor, freshman, post, came off the bench to score 11 points with 15 boards

Amanda Kollodge, Albany, senior, guard, 15 points

Sarah Conlon, St. Peter, junior, forward, 13 and 10

The Outlook

As Roseau coach Kelsey Didrikson said after last night's game, her team had a lot of things to clean up if it's going to achieve its goal of a 2nd championship. But, who doubts that they'll do that? Still, Kaie Tornstrom is a hand full for Caledonia. But Roseau has 2 hands full.

In the 2nd AA semi, Minnehaha had 4 scorers in double figures and a 5th starter in double figures in rebounds. Albany has Paige Meyer. But if 2-on-1 is good enough for Roseau, 5-on-1 would seem to play to Minnehaha's advantage.
