Edina edged Eden Prairie 50-46 in a #2 vs. #3 match-up--not their seed; their statewide ranking. Here's a game that cries out for a statewide, NCAA-style seeding and bracketing in AAA.
Edina led most of the way, until EP took a 44-43 lead on a basket by Shayne Mullaney. MC McGrory answered for Edina at 2:15. Lindsey Johnson added a lay-up with 12 seconds left to make it 48-44, rendering moot a Mullaney lay-up at :03.
Defense was the name of the game. Gopher recruits Mullaney and Jackie Johnson scored 9 and 8, shooting 3-of-17 on 2 point shots. Katybeth Biewen, Edina's star guard, similarly was held to 6 points, but McGrory and Johnson each scored 17 to lead the Hornets to victory.
This will be Edina's 1st state tournament appearance since 2007, and the 1st time EP is not in the field since 2008. Edina has the look of a #2 seed, I would think.
St. Thomas Women Advance
I gotta sneak this in here somewhere. The Tommies defeated Tufts 50-47 to become the 1st MIAC women to advance to the Elite Eight in 12 years. Sarah Smith and Taylor Young each scored 15 points. The Tommies pay Calvin 28-1 after a 68-50 win over previously undefeated Chicago, tonight for a slot in the Final Four.
Player of the Day
Taylor Kujava scored 34 points to lead Ada-Borup back to the state tournament after a 2 year absence. Ada upset #1 seed Parkers Prairie 71-58, breaking away from a 46-46 tie.
Coach of the Day
Dave Smart, Ada-Borup
