There were a bushel basket full of upsets last night in boys and girls sectional play. Perhaps the biggest upset of all was:
Boys
#8 Brainerd 69 #1 Buffalo 67 (2OT) in Boys Section 8AAAA. This is the 1st time in 11 years that Brainerd is advancing even as far as a section semi-final. Riley Kline scored 18 for Brainerd. Ethan Free scored 28 for Buffalo. The irony of the whole deal is that #8 seeded Brainerd had already beaten #1 Buffalo this year--drilled 'em, in fact, 73-52, back on Jan. 7.
Next best upset is #4 Sartell-St. Stephen 71 #1 Little Falls 63 in Section 8AAA.
Also #5 Southwest Star Concept beat #4 Springfield 75-68 in a mild upset. The real news here is that the defending Class A champion is out.
Girls
The big upset here is #4 Centennial 53 #1 Roseville 49 in the Girls Section 5AAAA.
The other game-to-have-seen was #1 Providence 54 #3 Watertown-Mayer 51 in Section 5AA. This marks the end of Marissa Janning's high school career.
Player of the Day
Cayla McMorris, Park Center girls, scored 27 points in an 80-61 rout of Totino-Grace.
Coach of the Day
Scott Stanfield, Brainerd boys
