The Big Game 2-1-12: Gustavus Men Take 1st Place in MIAC

The Gustavus men took over sole possession of 1st place in the MIAC tonight, outlasting St. Olaf 64-63, while St. Thomas continued its recent struggles, losing to St. John's at home 61-56.

Meanwhile, Augsburg moved into a 3rd place tie with St. Olaf by beating 5th place Hamline 99-91.

Gustavus 64 St. Olaf 63

The Oles led 7-0 and never trailed until 52-51. The Gusties quickly built a 62-53 lead at 4:24, culminating a 17-4 run. The Oles closed with a rush, however, missing a 3 at the final buzzer that could have won the game.Stu Neville of St. Olaf led all scorers with 20 points and all rebounders with 9. Ben Biewen scored 18 for the Gusties, with 5 assists, while Seth Anderson scored 17.

St. John's 61 St. Thomas 56

The Johnnies took the lead for good at 49-47 on a 3 by Seth Marx at 5:08. Soon it was 54-47 and the Tommies never got closer than 4 after that. Aaron Barmore scored 22 for the Johnnies, and added 7 boards, while John Nance scored 20 for the Tommies. No other player scored in double figures.


Augsburg 99 Hamline 91

Augsburg shot o 60 percent and got to the FT line 45 times. 4 starters and 1 bench player scored in double figures for the Auggies. Augsburg led by 9, 46-37, at the half, and Hamline never got closer than 9 points in the 2nd half until the final score.

As a result, the standings look like this:

1. Gustavus 12-3
2. St. Thomas 11-4
3. Augsburg 10-5
    St. Olaf 10-5
5. St.John's 8-6
6. Hamline 8-7

As it happens, 6 is the number of MIAC playoff berths. And most of the round robin of games among these 6 is now done with. If the playoffs started today, these are your participants. And even if the playoffs are a month away, these are still probably your participants.
