The Big Game 1-31-12: Kennedy girls, Tartan boys upset

The Henry Sibley boys and the Eagan girls pulled off a pair of big upsets Tuesday night, to highlight a full slate of high school games.

The Boys

Henry Sibley surprised Tartan at Tartan 62-46 as Adam Huessner scored 15 and Nick Golberg 13 for the winners. Darrion Strong scored 17 for the losers who are rated #10AAAA but drop to 13-4. This is also their 1st loss in the Classic Suburban, where they drop into a 1st place tie with St. Thomas. Sibley is now 9-8.

Not such a surprise: #2AAAA Hopkins 76 #5AAAA Eden Prairie 59. Revenge is sweet. EP gave Hopkins its only loss a year ago. Nick Jorgenson scored 19, Siyani Chambers 18, Demetrius Martin 15 and Zach Stahl 11 for Hopkins, Sander Mohn and Andre Wallace 17 each for EP.

EDIT: I now have a report of BBE 79 Holdingford 25. But here's another upset: Holdingford 65 #1A and previously unbeaten Belgrade-Brooten-Elrose 57. No details are available as I write this.

And previously unbeaten #5AA Redwood Valley lost at Marshall 54-52. Marshall's unrated but AAA and by far the largest school in the Southwest Conference, so it's never really an upset when Marshall wins. Redwood is still in 1st in the Southwest at 8-1 (and, as far as I'm concerned, #1AA), Marshall is 6-2.

The Girls

Eagan shocked #2AAAA Bloomington Kennedy 73-72. Jess Hart scored 23 and Sammie Delzotto 22 points for the winner, while the losers got 19 from Jade Martin, 15 from Kenisha Bell and 10 from Heather Bachmann.

Not a surprise: #1AAAA Hopkins 65 #3AAAA Eden Prairie 58. The Royals led at half-time 43-18 before EP had a very big 2nd half, actually getting within 52-49 at one point. Hopkins got 25 from Nia Coffey, 17 from Taylor Anderson and 10 from Viria Livingston. Sydney Coffey missed her 2nd game.

#4AAAA Edina beat Minnetonka 51-47. Katybeth Biewen continued her run of increased scoring of late (with 24) since the loss of her running mate Mary Claire (MC) McGrory.
